“Our aim is not merely to make the child understand, and still less to force him to memorize, but so to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his innermost core.” – Maria Montessori
The Creator Faire is a community event, open to all families, that was designed and is organized by River Montessori Charter School parent volunteers. RMCS is a public, independent charter elementary school in Petaluma, California celebrating its 10-year anniversary!
Founded in 2009, RMCS serves nearly 200 children in grades TK-6 and has served more than 600 children in Sonoma, Napa, Solano and Marin counties to reach their academic, personal, and social potential. The school is supported by the River Montessori Foundation, a parent-led nonprofit organization that fosters community among the schools families and raises funding to bridge the gap between a high-quality Montessori experience and limited public funding.
The Montessori approach to teaching and learning was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, a scientific researcher who carefully studied early childhood development in order to develop her educational approach. Montessori found that children learn by playing and building with interesting, relevant materials and tools, and proposed that “a prepared environment” could help them learn and grow into confident, independent, self-directed learners. “Education in not what the teacher gives,” Montessori wrote in The Absorbent Mind. “Education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment.”
At the Creator Faire, children and their parents will have the opportunity to explore their senses, experiment with different materials, take apart and build things, and learn by doing. All proceeds from the Creator Faire will benefit the River Montessori Foundation.
